Twickel (Szekszárd Region)

Baron György Twickel, son of Mária Zichy and Baron Clemens Twickel is the owner of this almost 500-acre property in the Szekszard region of Hungary . Maria Zichy was an offspring of a well-known Hungarian noble family, who had to escape Hungary after the revolution in 1956. She met Baron Clemens Twickel, a member of German nobility while in exile. The family returned to Hungary after the fall of the communist regime in 1989 and decided to invest into wine industry. György Twickel lives on a property next to the winery with his wife and 4 daughters.

The new owners reconstructed the winery, introduced new varieties and were among the first ones in Hungary to introduce yield control. They have been striving for the highest quality since and managed to make Twickel Wine Estate on of the most modern wineries of the country. The main varieties grown in the vineyards are Kadarka, Balufrankisch, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Portugieser and Syrah.

LISZT SELECTION WALTZ CUVÉE 2012 (14%)

The Liszt Family of wines was named after Franz Liszt, the famous Hungarian composer. He was a friend of Count Géza Zichy, an ancestor of György Twickel. Count Zichy always loved music but he lost his right arm due to a hunting accident at the age of 14. Instead of giving up he trained himself to be a left handed piano artist. Franz Liszt recognized the boy's talent and became his teacher.

The Liszt Family wines represent well both the varieties grown in the region and the characteristics of the area. Waltz Cuvée is a red blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Syrah. On the nose it brings the fragrance of peppers, cherries and paprika, all these forming a nice unity and offering the characteristics of the region. The noble and balanced acids make it an elegant wine perfect to be paired with both lighter red meat dishes and game.
